PRAGUE - The Dalai Lama, the Tibetan spiritual leader, said in Prague on Monday he loved outgoing U.S. President George W. Bush despite some of his policies which he described as a "disaster."

"To be honest, some of his policies have been a disaster, but as a person, I love him, he is open, very truthful," the Dalai Lama told a press conference.

"At the first meeting, we were very close" from the start, he added.

During his private visit to Prague, the Dalai Lama also called on the global community to show firmness and a critical spirit when dealing with China, adding that good friends could cope with criticism.

Bush received the Tibetan leader in the White House in October 2007, angering the Chinese government.

In September this year, China warned the US to stop interfering in its affairs after Bush called the Dalai Lama to voice concerns over the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader's health.
