Bylukuppe (Periyapatna taluk), Aug. 31 --
Thousands of Tibetans -- men, women and children
-- accorded a grand welcome to the 75-year-old
Lhamo Dhondup, the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibetans,
when he arrived at the Tibetan settlement in
Periyapatna, Mysore district, on a four-day visit.

He travelled by a helicopter today from Bangalore
which landed at the helipad in Camp No. 1 and
drove to Sera Jey Monastery, about 7 km from the
helipad and close to Kushalnagar town in Kodagu district.

About 10,000 Buddhist monks (Lamas), holding
incense stood on either side of the road where
the Dalai Lama's motorcade passed through. As he
alighted from the car, the monks led him into the
auditorium of the Monastery holding a huge yellow umbrella over his head.

Apart from the monks, there were about 10,000
Tibetan refugees from Bylukuppe, Kollegal,
Mundergod and Dharmashala (Himachal Pradesh) at
the time of his arrival. Tibetan artistes wearing
masks presented Toshi Shopa, a traditional dance as the Dalai Lama arrived.

Samdhong Rinpoche, Prime Minister of Tibetan
Government in exile, his Deputy Gyari Dolma,
Cabinet Ministers and about 40 members of Tibetan
Parliament in exile and other dignitaries
received the Dalai Lama. After offering worship
to the idol of Awa-lokiteswara Buddha at the
Monastery, he was taken to the adjoining Sera Nie Monastery.

The Dalai Lama will address the Parliament later
in the day today and also tomorrow. He will leave
Bylukuppe, popularly known as 'Mini Tibet,' on Sept. 3.

Tight security was in place in Bylukuppe with
Police personnel as well as intelligence officials.
