Choephel, the 19 year old boy from Ngaba County, succumbed to injuries on 11 October 2011, around 2 pm (Tibet local time) in a hospital in Barkham, Ngaba Prefecture, say our sources to Tibet.

On 7 October, two former monks of Ngaba, Choepel and Khaying had set themselves alight in the central town of Ngaba, protesting against Chinese rule. Local reports from Tibet on that day said that the two were severely injured and feared of their demise.

Khaying, 18 years old, passed away on 10 October, on the same day China’s official news agency, Xinhua, reported that Choepel and Khaying were out of danger and that their injuries were not life-threatening. However, in the next couple of days both of them succumbed to injuries and passed away.

According to reliable sources, similar to the deceased Khaying’s family, Chinese authorities have also refused to hand over Choepel’s body to his family. Chinese authorities also restricted Choepel’s family into performing the last ritual prayers at their home, limiting the number of monks for the ritual to five. Local residents were warned with strict orders against showing any grievances of Choepel’s death or expressing condolences to the family of the deceased.

Nevertheless, the local Tibetans in the Ngaba district had closed down all shops and businesses as a sign of respect and show solidarity with the self-immolating Tibetans and their families for three days. The locals also visited monasteries to perform prayers for the deceased.
