Dharamshala: A Tibetan student in London was honoured by British Foreign Secretary David Miliband for winning the 2008 UK human rights hero essay competition entitled “Who is your human rights hero”?
Thupten Palden, who is a recipient of Pestalozzi Scholarship to study in UK, was presented the honour by Mr Miliband at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London.
The essay competition was organised by the United Nations Association of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (UNA-UK), which is the leading independent policy authority on the UN, to mark the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Thupten wrote his essay on Woeser, a Tibetan author, well known for her critical writings on China’s wrong policies in Tibet and who lives under constant surveillance in Beijing.
"It is common for people to violate the rights of others because the victims are ignorant of their basic rights," Thupten said after receiving the award.
