Ladakhis demanding recognition of their language

December 14, 2007

Jammu, Dec 13, 2007 (ANI): Thousands of Ladakhis staged a demonstration
here today, demanding recognition of Ladakhi language known as Bhoti.

Carrying flags and placards, over 2000 natives of Ladakh in traditional
Ladakhi costumes took to the streets and shouted slogans in support of their

"Our first demand is that our language Bhoti should be given due
acceptance by the concerned authorities. When Manipuri Nepali and other
such languages can be given due importance, why not our language? Since
fifteen years, we have been protesting. It is a shame that till date our
demands have not been met," said Tashi Targez, a protestor.

The protestors also demanded that the pilgrimage route to Kailash
Mansarovar in Tibet should be opened via Ladakh.

At present, the Hindu pilgrims are allowed to go to Kailash Mansarovar
via Uttrakhand route which is prone to landslides.

Ladakhis contend that the route to Kailash Mansarovar via Ladakh is
comparatively easier and safer. It would also improve the economy of
people in far-flung areas along the route. But this would need
acceptance from the Chinese authorities.

The people of Ladakh have been for long complaining that the region has
been neglected by the Central and State Governments.

The Ladakh region, situated at the height of about 11,000 feet above the
sea level, is the county's highest inhabited area.
