Beijing, Jan 19, 2008: Construction is expected to begin this year on
the 254-km extension line of Qinghai-Tibet railway linking the cities of
Lhasa and Xigaze, the latter bordering India, Nepal and Bhutan.

It would be the first feeder line of Qinghai-Tibet railway and to be
completed by 2010 at a cost of USD 1.42 billion, state media reported.

"Experts are still working on the designs and environmental assessments
of the extension line and, the government officials have started
calculating compensation to those who will lose their land and
properties to the railway", Tibet Autonomous Region chairman, Qiangba
Puncog said in Lhasa.

The highest railway in the world, the 1,956-km long Qinghai-Tibet
railway from Xining city in Qinghai province to Lhasa in Tibet, was
officially put into operation in July 2006.

Qiangba said Tibet plans to invest 28 billion Yuan (USD 3.7 billion) in
10 key construction projects this year, including the extension of the
Qinghai-Tibet railway, official Xinhua news agency said.

Nine other projects would also commence this year.
