New Delhi, 29 January: Ahead of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's visit to
the northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh [called South Tibet by
China], two Lok Sabha [lower house of Indian parliament] legislators
have sought passage of a resolution in parliament that every inch of the
border state was part of India and cannot be compromised.

Seeking special financial packages for the northeastern state, Kiren
Rijiju and Tapir Gao also urged the prime minister to consider
implementation of their demand that the status of populated areas of
both sides of the McMahon Line [considered by India to be legal border
with China; not recognized by China] would not be altered to enable a
permanent solution to the border dispute with China.

In a letter to Singh, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) [opposition
party] legislators said a firm assurance should be given by passing a
resolution in parliament during the budget session that "every inch of
Arunachal Pradesh cannot be compromised".

They demanded reopening of traditional trade routes with China through
places like Kinjomane, Taksing, Mechuka, Monigong, Geling and Kibito in
the border talks with China.

The parliamentarians, while welcoming the prime minister on his maiden
visit to the state, wanted a declaration that all border points and
villages be connected with roads and telecommunication. They also sought
a special budgetary component in the 11th [five-year] plan for
infrastructure development in the state and release of funds during the
ongoing fiscal year for completion of several centrally
[federally]-funded projects.
