No damage reported from Dingri earthquake

No damage or casualty was reported immediately as
a result of an earthquake measuring 5.0 on
Richter scale which shook Dingri County in the
southern border of Shigatse Prefecture, Tibet, at
12:42 am (Beijing Time) on Feb 26, reported
China's official Xinhua news agency Feb 26,
citing China Earthquake Administration.

It said the epicentre was 28.4 degrees north
latitude and 86.8 degrees east longitude, with a
depth of 33 kilometres. Other reports said the
tremor was felt in neighbouring Nepal and parts
of northeastern India. "Dingri is about 200 miles
(320 kilometres) west of Tibet's capital Lhasa and shares border with Nepal.

"According to AP news agency Feb 26, the US
Geological survey gave the magnitude as 5.4,
enough to do serious damage, although the area is
remote and lightly populated. China's online
Tibet news service Feb 26 said the
14,049 sq km county's population is just 49,000.

"The IANS news service Feb 26 cited the US
Geological Survey as saying the tremor was felt
at 10.15 am in Assam and other northeastern
states on India, besides in Nepal and China. It
said the tremor jolted homes in Assam's main city
Guwahati, besides several other places in the
region. " Feb 26 said minor tremors
were felt in many parts of Nepal, including
capital Kathmandu, at 10:45 am NST and even as
far away as Kolkata (670 km from the epicenter)
of the Indian state of Best Bengal.

"Chin's state media also reported that a quake
Feb 25 its southwestern province of Yunnan
injured at least 29 people and damaged 1,446
houses, including some that were destroyed
entirely. Dozens of aftershocks continued to rock
the area around Chuxiong prefecture where the
quake struck shortly before 1 pm, reported AP Feb 26.
