"We Tibetans are looking for a legitimate and meaningful autonomy, an arrangement that would enable Tibetans to live within the framework of the People’s Republic of China."

The 14th Dalai Lama, spiritual leader of Tibet,
will visit the University of Wisconsin-Madison
May 15 and 16 to inaugurate a new center devoted
to the study of healthy mind development, the university said Wednesday.

The Center for Investigating Healthy Minds,
founded by UW neuroscientist Richard Davidson,
was created to study scientifically how healthy
minds develop and what can be done to cultivate
those qualities in children and adults.

Davidson, a professor of psychology and
psychiatry and director of the Waisman Laboratory
for Brain Imaging and Behavior, has worked with
expert meditation practitioners to determine how
meditation changed their brains to encourage
happiness, compassion and kindness. The center,
the university said, will extend that research to
a broader audience and will be the first of its
kind to include meditation space and a brain imaging lab under one roof.

"When I met the Dalai Lama in 1992, he challenged
me to adapt the tools of Western science, used to
study fear and depression, to the study of
positive qualities, like kindness and compassion.
The Center for Investigating Healthy Minds is a
response to that challenge," Davidson said in a statement.

The Dalai Lama will join Davidson to speak on
"Investigating Healthy Minds" at 2:15 p.m. May 16
at Madison's Overture Center for the Arts. Daniel
Goleman, bestselling author of "Emotional
Intelligence" and "Ecological Intelligence," will moderate the conversation.

Tickets are free and the process for obtaining
them will be announced in mid-April.

The conversation also will be available via live
Webcast at .

The Dalai Lama also will participate in a private
scientific meeting over the weekend, the university said.
