Thubten Samdup la, the Representative of His
Holiness the Dalai Lama in Northern Europe,
addressed a well-attended meeting on the
Cross-Party Group on Tibet in the Scottish
Parliament on the evening of Thursday 28 January.
The Scottish Parliament is located in Edinburgh, the capital city of Scotland.

The meeting, which was also addressed by Lord
David Steel, who spoke of his visit to Tibet as
part of a UK Parliamentary delegation last
September, was an early opportunity for members
of the Cross-Party Group on Tibet to meet with
Thubten Samdup la following his taking up his
current post four months previously, and just two
months after the 5th World Parliamentarians' Convention on Tibet, in Rome.

Prior to meeting with the members of the
Cross-Party Group, Mr Samdup, accompanied by the
Cross Party Group's Convener Mike Pringle MSP,
had a series of meetings with representatives of
all the main parties represented in the Scottish
Parliament, with the absence of the ruling
Scottish National Party, the appropriate Minister
being regrettably unavailable on the day. The
meetings were uniformly positive and provided the
basis for further contact in the future directly
with the political parties as well as with
members of the Cross-Party Group on Tibet.

Mr Samdup communicated the urgency of the
situation facing the Tibetan people and of the
need to positively engage with the Chinese people
as well as their government. Speaking on behalf
of the Cross-Party Group, Mike Pringle MSP gave
an undertaking to follow through on initiatives
arising out of the Parliamentarians' conference
in Rome, and in particular to engage with the
Chinese Consul on the Memorandum on Genuine Autonomy for the Tibetan People.

The meeting concluded with Convener Mike Pringle
MSP assuring Representative Thubten Samdup la
that he had a standing invitation to attend all
future meetings of the Cross-Party Group on Tibet in the Scottish Parliament.

Following the meeting, the Representative went on
to meet with members of the Tibetan community in Edinburgh.
