Feb 2, 2009:   The Dalai Lama was conferred an
honorary citizenship of Rome despite strong protests from China.

Feb 2-6, 1990: The Dalai Lama visited
Czechoslovakia at the personal invitation of President Vaclav Havel.

Feb 2, 1986:   The Dalai Lama and Pope John Paul
II met in New Delhi and discussed religious matters and the situation in Tibet.

Feb 5, 1985:   The Chairman of the exile Tibetan
parliament, Mr Nyima Sangpo, issued a press
statement, condemning China's Oct 31, 2004
five-point proposal for the Dalai Lama's return
home, and said, "The Tibetan people will never be
fully satisfied as long as they live under foreign domination."

Feb 4, 1978:   During a three-day visit to
Nepal's capital Kathmandu, China's Deputy Premier
Deng Xiaoping told a press conference that his
country was not in a hurry to open Tibet to
foreigners, citing its difficult terrain and high
altitude as obstacles for the development of tourism and expansion of trade.

Feb 5, 1410:   Je Tsongkhapa Lobsang Dragpa was
invited to Ganden Monastery in Lhasa as its first abbot.

Feb 6, 1986:   Bhutan's King Jigme Senge Wangchuk
ordered the release of seven Tibetans from
prisons on a year's probation. They were arrested
in 1974 along with about 20 others, including the
Dalai Lama's representative, SP Lhading.

Feb 7, 2001:   The project for Qinghai-Tibet
Railway construction was approved by the State
Department Premier's Office Conference.

Feb 7, 1994:   In an interview with the Japanese
newspaper Mainichi Shimbun in New Delhi, the
Dalai Lama said that complete independence for
Tibet had become impossible and that Tibet's
future lay in the federation of a Tibetan
autonomous region with the Chinese state.
