Tibetans from New Mexico will join thousands worldwide Monday in
marking the 49th anniversary of the 1959 national uprising against
China's occupation of Tibet with a colorful march and demonstration at
the Capitol and on the Plaza.
In India, hundreds of Tibetans are reportedly burning their residency
cards and beginning a march back to Tibet. They are scheduled to
arrive at the border near the time China will be hosting the
international Olympic games.
The march begins at 11 a.m. at the Roundhouse and continues to the
Plaza. In addition to Mayor David Cross, speakers include: Rigzin
Latoe, president of the Tibetan Association of Santa Fe; Bill Hume,
senior policy adviser to the governor; Jeff Harbor, a member of the
Board of Advisers of the Tibetan Association; Kathy Ni Keefe, a member
of the board of directors of Students for a Free Tibet; and Thupten
Thondup of Project Tibet.
