Senior Chinese leaders re-affirm CPC jurisdiction over Dalai Lama’s reincarnation

August 3, 2015

Phayul, August 3, 2015: China has yet again accused the Tibetan leader Dalai Lama of "personalizing" the issue of his reincarnation leading to angry reactions from the Tibetans and supporters who rubbished it as yet another 'political gimmick' to undermine the religious sentiments of the Tibetans.

"How can a totalitarian government which treats religion as criminal offence suddenly show so much interest in the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama? They know that the key to the hearts of Tibetan people lies in him, and now are trying to prepare grounds for installation of their own, exactly as they did with the Panchen Lama," asks Lhakpa Tsering, founder of the Tibet Theatre and a youth leader aspiring to become a member of the Tibetan parliament.

A statement issued after a conclave chaired by Chinese President Xi Jinping and attended by senior communist leaders to discuss measures for ‘stability in Tibet’ and counter ‘anti-separatism’ indicated that the issue of Dalai Lama's reincarnation has always been the jurisdiction of the Beijing leadership.

"The authority of the central government has always been important in the reincarnation process. Historical precedents have clearly shown the central government's vital role in the process. Since then, all confirmations of the Dalai Lama have required approval by the central Chinese government, which has deemed the process an important issue concerning sovereignty and national security,” said the statement published by the official Chinese government mouthpiece Xinhua.

The statement comes after the recently held conclave of senior members of the Chinese Communist Party in Beijing on July 30.

A member of Tibetan Parliament Karma Yeshi told Phayul, “The claim of Chinese government’s regarding the reincarnation of His Holiness the Dalai lama is ridiculous at best. If we look at the history from the first to the current Dalai Lama, there has been no such incidences to authenticate such claim. If they are referring to the patron-priest relationship, Tibet had such relationships with other nations like Mongolia also.”

“Safeguarding national unity and strengthening ethnic unity should be highlighted in work involving Tibet,” the statement in Xinhua read.

Tibetan MP Yeshi said such statements are not made in favor of the Tibetans but the Chinese settlers who are migrating into Tibet on a large scale with each passing year. “I fear that any changes introduced by the Chinese government will somehow translate into to further restrictions on the Tibetans who are already marginalized.”

He further added, “Even if China introduces their own Dalai Lama like they did in the case of Panchen Lama, not just Tibetans but people from the entire Himalayan region and followers around the world will not recognize him as the true Dalai Lama”.

The Tibetan leader whose 80th birthday was celebrated by Tibetans, supporters and admirers alike all over the world last month had assured that he felt healthy and not in a haste to discuss about his reincarnation.
