Canadian Parliamentary Friends of Tibet hosts Lhakar reception on the Hill

June 13, 2016

Canada Tibet Committee, June 9, 2016 – Members of Parliament, leaders of Tibet associations and NGOs, retired Tibetan officials, and Tibetan interns with their host families gathered in the East Block of Parliament Hill yesterday for the annual celebration of Lhakar – an expression of being Tibetan.  The event marked the conclusion of the 2016 Parliamentary Internship Program for young Tibetans in Canada.

Parliamentary Friends of Tibet (PFT) Chair, MP Arif Virani, hosted the reception which featured a special panel discussion on “Youth Engagement for Tibet”, co-organized with the Canada Tibet Committee (CTC).  Panel facilitator Thubten Samdup, former Representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama in the UK and CTC founder, emphasized the importance of reaching out to young Chinese students here in Canada.  Kasur Dicki Chhoyang, former Minister of International Relations, urged young Tibetans and Tibet supporters in Canada to amplify Tibet messaging by building expertise in relevant thematic issues such as environment and gender.

MPs from each of Canada’s political parties spoke eloquently about their commitment to advancing the Tibet issue in Canada’s parliament.  PFT Co-Chairs James Maloney, Garnett Genuis, and Randall Garrison reaffirmed their commitment to work across party lines in order to keep Tibet on the Canadian agenda, particularly as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau prepares for his first official visit to China in September 2016.

The reception concluded with photos and Tibetan snacks prepared by the Ottawa Tibetan Community Association.
