Tibetan woman receives provincial NDP nomination in Toronto area riding

Canada Tibet Committee, September 15, 2017 – Bhutila Karpoche, a PhD candidate in the Policy Studies Program at Ryerson University and long-time staff person in the office of MPP Cheri DiNovo, has won the provincial nomination as official candidate for the New Democratic Party (NDP) in Parkdale-High Park (Toronto).

If elected in the next provincial elections scheduled for June 2018, Karpoche will be the first Tibetan elected to public office in Canada.  Her nomination was supported by both incumbent Cheri DiNovo and by former federal MP Peggy Nash, a dedicated Tibet supporter.

In accepting her nomination, Karpoche promised to focus attention on environmental protection including efforts to improve air and water quality.

Born in Nepal, Karpoche has long been active within the Tibetan community in Canada.  She has served on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Tibetan Community of Ontario, was active within the Tibetan Women’s Association of Ontario, and from 2015 to 2017 sat as Canadian representative on the steering committee of the International Tibet Network.

Karpoche received her undergraduate degree at the University of British Columbia and her Masters at the University of Toronto.
