Radio Taiwan International - Taipei,Taiwan

President Chen Shui-bian on Saturday said that China plans to use next year's Beijing Olympics as a propaganda tool to cover the country's human rights abuses. The president was speaking in Taipei at the opening of a forum on the human rights situation in Tibet.

The president said that it would be a gross abuse of the Olympic spirit and charter if China were to use the games to cover its human rights violations and even prevent the international media from reporting on the true situation.

President Chen also said that Taiwan and Tibet face similar difficulties as the autonomy of both is threatened by China. Chen also expressed his admiration for Tibet's spiritual leader in exile, the Dalai Lama. Chen said the Dalai Lama believes as he does, that Taiwan's future should be decided by the people of Taiwan.

In related news, Cabinet spokesman Shieh Jhy-weh on Friday said that Taiwan has no intention of boycotting next year's Olympics in Beijing. Shieh was responding to the suggestion on Thursday by US Congressman Dana Rohrbacher that Taiwan boycott the games to protest human rights abuses by China.
