News from Tibet Autonomous Region is that the Heavenly Lake Namtso was closed to tourists due to the continual snowfall in the lake area and it is expected to reopen to tourists in April, 2009.
According to the Namtso Tourism Administration, the continual snowfall around Namsto has blocked most roads to the scenic area. Most roads were covered with heavy snow and ice, and the temperature dropped dramatically, making it unsuitable for tourists to enter into the scenic area. The lake will reopen to tourists in April next year when the weather conditions become pleasant.
Namtso, which means ‘Heavenly Lake’ in Tibetan language, is considered as the best known one of the three largest holy lakes (Namtso Lake, Manasarova Lake, Yamdrok Yumtso Lake). It is also a sacred Tibetan Buddhist place.
Situated at an altitude of 15,479 feet, Namtso Lake is the world’s highest saltwater lake in altitude. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Tibet.
