Berkeley -- Berkeley will have its equivalent of
the harmonic convergence today: a visit by the
Dalai Lama, a raucous Earth Day festival and
special farmers' market celebrating the elimination of plastic bags.

Visitors are advised to use public transit,
carpool and ride bicycles downtown, which is
expected to be near gridlock due to the Dalai
Lama's security detail and the multiple festivals.

The city will close Allston Way between Milvia
Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way from 10
a.m. to 6 p.m. Expanded bike parking will be
available at Civic Center Park, and the city's
car-share fleet will be relocated to the south
side of Center Street, east of Milvia, for easier access.

The Earth Day festival will be from noon to 5
p.m. at Civic Center Park, 2151 Martin Luther
King Jr. Way, featuring music, dancing, biodiesel
demonstrations and other activities. The farmers'
market will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Center
Street, adjacent to Civic Center Park. Raffles,
prizes and gift bags will be part of the
festivities marking the elimination of plastic bags.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama will make two
appearances in Berkeley. At 2 p.m. he'll speak on
"Peace Through Compassion" at the Greek Theatre,
and at 3:45 he'll address Tibetan and Himalayan
exiles, as well as the general public, at the
Berkeley Community Theater in an event sponsored
by the Tibetan Association of Northern
California. Both events are sold out. On Sunday
the Dalai Lama will visit a San Francisco soup kitchen.
