Shimla -- Chief of Army Staff Gen Deepak Kapoor
called upon Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal
today, and supported the state government’s move
of connecting the border till Leh with an all-
weather railway line through Himachal Pradesh.
Gen Kapoor said that this railway line would
strengthen the communication network on the national border.

Dhumal said that the Army’s support to connect
the national borders with the railway line
passing through Mandi-Kullu-Manali-Keylong, after
extension of the Bhanupalli-Bilaspur-Beri railway
line, has upheld the strategic importance of the project.

General Kapoor also underlined the need for early
construction of the Rohtang tunnel. "Himachal
Pradesh is strategically important for the Army.
since its borders are with the Tibet region that
is under the control of China,” he said. He added
that all important border roads should be
maintained by BRO, and there should be
concentration on creation of quality road network
in border areas, instead of non-priority regions.

On the demand of the CM, Gen Kapoor said two new
military schools would be opened in the state,
and local children would be admitted as day
scholars in Military School, Chail. The CM raised
the demand for enhancement in the Recruitable
Male Population (RMP) quota for the youth of
Himachal Pradesh in the armed forces.

General Kapoor and his wife Kirti Kapoor called
upon Governor Prabha Rau and visited the Army
Training Command (ARTRAC), Shimla. They were
received by Lt Gen BS Jaswal, the GOC-in-C.
