When the Dalai Lama visits France in June, it is
expected he will be awarded the title of Citizen
of the City of Paris by Paris Mayor Bertrand
Delanoe. The Tibetan spiritual leader's trip to
France is part of a European tour that also takes
in Denmark, Iceland and the Netherlands.
Countries, and particularly governments, that
receive the Dalai Lama can expect a protest from
Beijing or even retaliation. Beijing accuses him
of being intent on achieving independence for
Tibet after 58 years of Chinese rule.

The Dalai Lama says he only wants autonomy for the Himalayan region.

Germany, the United States and Australia have
also been in trouble with Beijing recently for
honoring the Tibetan spiritual leader.

According to AFP, Delanoe's decision in April
2008 to give the award to the Dalai Lama provoked
a sharp response from China. And when French
President Nicolas Sarkozy met the exiled leader
in Poland in Dec 2008, China suspended a summit
with the European Union that would have been
hosted by France, which held the rotating presidency at the time.

Despite a letter of protest from the Chinese
ambassador, according to AFP, the Dutch
parliament has already announced that its
deputies will receive him when he visits The Netherlands. May/09
