sail from Spain in search for India. His
expedition led to general European awareness of the American continents.

On this day in 1904, the Dalai Lama fled Lhasa as
British troops invaded Tibet. The Ching court on
August 26 ordered the Pachen Lama to take over
Tibetan affairs from the Dalai Lama.

On this day in 1960, Niger gained its independence from France.
