BBC Monitoring Service - United Kingdom; Jul 17, 2001

Text of report in English by Czech news agency CTK

Prague, 17 July: Senate Deputy Chairman Jan Ruml (Freedom Union) is planning
to set up an international committee in protest at the decision of the
International Olympic Committee to allow the 2008 Olympics to be held in the
Chinese city of Beijing, Pravo reports today quoting a source in his party.

Chairman of the Civic Democratic Alliance (ODA) Michael Zantovsky, who also
heads the Senate foreign affairs committee, is working with Ruml on the
idea.

The committee would monitor human rights in China and if they do not
improve by 2006 it would call on the world to boycott the Beijing Olympics,
Pravo says.

Pravo says Ruml and Zantovsky are to announce their plans at a press
conference on Thursday.
