Chinese vice-president Xi Jinping, tipped as a future leader, arrives in the US to meet officials in Washington, including Barack Obama and the US vice-president, Joe Biden. There were demonstrations outside the White House by protesters demanding freedom for Tibet, where China has held power since 1950
