Tibetan official from China's National People's Congress visits Ottawa

June 20, 2013 - The Chairman of China's Standing Committee of the People's Congress of Tibet Autonomous Region, Padma Choling, made a quiet visit to Ottawa this week where he met with Speaker of the Canadian Senate, Noel Kinsella (CPC) on June 18, 2013.
Following the Ottawa visit, Choling led his delegation to Washington DC where they met with US legislators and think tanks. According to media reports, the delegation’s message included claims that self-immolation protests in Tibet were actually “criminal acts premeditated, plotted and manipulated by overseas separatist forces”.Padma Choling served 17 years in the People's Liberation Army before becoming an official in the Tibetan regional government in 1986, working in Shigatse and then Lhasa, rising to Vice-Chair of the TAR in 2003. He was Governor of the Tibet Autonomous Region from 2010 – 2013 amid speculation that the appointment of a military man signaled China’s toughened approach after the 2008 uprisings. Reportedly more amiable than his stern appearance, he is nicknamed “beggar” by Tibetans in Lhasa.
