Dalai Lama to visit Indiana next week

WASHINGTON, Oct 16 (AP) -- Washington honors the Dalai Lama this week -- a move that is stirring anger in China.
The spiritual leader was set to meet with President Bush Tuesday and receive the prestigious Congressional Gold Medal on Wednesday. China says the events will put a strain on ties with the U.S.
The Dalai Lama will travel to Indiana next week for a six-day visit to Bloomington and West Lafayette.
While the Dalai Lama is seen as a figure of moral authority around the world and as a god-king in Tibet, China considers him a separatist. It claims he wants to destroy its sovereignty by pushing for Tibet's independence.
The Dalai Lama says he wants Tibet to have "real autonomy."
A State Department official says China is protesting this week's events by pulling out of an international strategy session on Iran scheduled for tomorrow.
The White House says President Bush sees the Dalai Lama as a spiritual leader and "someone who wants peace."
