Dalai Lama Speaks Before State Senate

ALBANY, N.Y. -- The Dalai Lama has opened a session of New York's state
Senate with a call for compassion during tough times.
The 73-year-old spiritual leader of Tibet expressed his respect for
American values and spoke briefly about the importance of honesty and
transparency. He says solutions to many human problems -- including
terrorism -- can be found in compassion.
He's in Albany Wednesday on a visit sponsored by the World Ethical
Foundations Consortium, a nonprofit organization co-founded by Seagram
heirs Clare and Sara Bronfman. The appearance follows a four-day visit
to Massachusetts and is part of a U.S. tour.
