REYKJAVIK, IcelandChina is protesting a meeting between the Dalai Lama and Icelandic ministers.

The exiled Tibetan leader is in Iceland at the invitation of a nonprofit group. During the visit the Dalai Lama took part in an interfaith gathering at a Reykjavik church and met with officials and lawmakers.

Icelandic foreign ministry spokeswoman Urdur Gunnarsdottir said China had formally registered its protest of the meetings.

Beijing accuses the Dalai Lama of seeking independence for Tibet and objects furiously when foreign leaders hold meetings with him.

The Chinese Embassy in Reykjavik could not immediately be reached for comment.
