2009 Country Reports on Human Rights Practice

Dharamshala: In its "2009 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices"
released on 11 March 2010, the US State Department expressed concern over
the serious human rights abuses in Tibet, and the status of Tibetan people's
unique religious, cultural and linguistic heritage.

The Chinese government's human rights record in Tibetan areas of China
remained poor, and it continue the severe repression of freedoms of speech,
religion, association, and movement that increased dramatically following
the March 2008 protests, the report stated.

The Chinese authorities continued to commit serious human rights abuses,
including extrajudicial killings, torture, arbitrary arrests, extrajudicial
detention, and house arrest. The preservation and development of Tibet's
unique religious, cultural, and linguistic heritage remained a concern, it
said.

The report details arbitrary or unlawful killing of Tibetans, disappearance,
torture, arbitrary arrest and detention by Chinese authorities. It also
highlights denial of fair public trial for Tibetan detainees and suppression
of freedom of speech and press, Internet freedom, academic freedom and
protection of cultural heritage in Tibet.

The situation in Tibet is in stark conrast to say Hong Kong where although
not perfect the people enjoy great freedoms.
