2. Dalai Lama Meets With Lech Welesa
WARSAW, Poland, AP, May 17 -- The Dalai Lama met Monday with fellow Nobel
Peace Prize laureate Lech Walesa.
Invited by the Helsinki Fund for Human Rights, the exiled Tibetan
spiritual leader also is to travel to Auschwitz during his five-day visit to
Poland.
He also planned a series of meetings with Polish parliament members, Roman
Catholic Primate Jozef Glemp and representatives of the tiny Buddhist and
Jewish communities.
The 1989 Nobel Prize winner presented President Walesa, the 1983 winner,
with a white ribbon, a Tibetan sign of respect and honor. During lunch at the
Dalai Lama's temporary official residence in Warsaw, they discussed their
efforts towards peace in the world, the PAP news agency said.
The Dalai Lama praised Poles for taking a peaceful path to regain
independence and restore democracy. "I am also fully committed to
nonviolence," he said.
The 57-year-old monk, the highest authority among Tibetans worldwide,
arrived in Warsaw on Sunday. He will travel to the Nazi death camp of
Auschwitz in southern Poland on Tuesday, joining with other religion leaders
in prayers at the International Center for Prayer and Dialogue.
