3. Dalai Lama Calls Poland Model for Peace

WARSAW, Poland, UPI, May 17 -- The Tibetan spiritual leader dalai lama
said Monday that Poland is a model for him in following a road of peaceful
struggle against the Chinese domination of Tibet.

The dalai lama, who arrived Sunday in Poland on a five-day visit, said
both Tibet and Poland are located between two powers -- Tibet between China
and India, and Poland between Germany and the former Soviet Union.

"There is a similarity between us," he told a news conference. "In your
struggle for your freedom, you used a peaceful way."

The dalai lama said that during his 14 years of negotiations with China,
which has occupied Tibet since 1950, he vowed that the Tibetan people under
his leadership will not resort to violence.

"The talks were a failure," he said. "As a result of it, the people in
Tibet became more radical. The situation is of some concern to me."

The dalai lama said he told Chinese authorities he is not asking for full
freedom for Tibet.

"I did not want a complete separation from China and I tried to take
China's and Tibet's interests into consideration," he said.

He said he would give up his political leadership if China agreed to form
an interim gopvernment in Tibet that, after two years, would hold national
elections to elect a parliament.

On his arrival, the dalai lama described the situation in his country as
very gloomy because of the violence used by the Chinese against his people.

In 1959, he fled Tibet and established a government-in-exile in India. In
1989, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
