5. "No place for Patten at China banquet"
By Robert Hardman
Daily Telegraph 15.10.99
The last Governor of Hong Kong, Chris Patten, has been left off the
guest list for next week's Buckingham Palace state banquet in honour of
President Jiang Zemin of China.
Other senior British figures with Hong Kong connections, including Sir
Percy Craddock, the former Downing Street policy advisor, and Lord
Maclehose, a former Governor, have received invitations.
"He is now Commissioner Patten and he has no part in the programme,"
said a Foreign Office spokesman.
British diplomats do not want next week clouded by and reminders of Mr
Patten's spats with the Chinese government, which called him a "serpent"
and "tango-dancer" among other insults.
But the main threat to a successful visit will come from human rights
activists. Pro-Tibetan groups are to stage a number of demonstrations.
