2. THE GREAT ARTISTIC HERITAGE OF MONGOLIA - The inaugural exhibition
of the Zanabazar Mongolian Institute of Buddhist Art
Place: Mongolian Modern Art Gallery, Cultural Centre of Ulaanbaatar,
Mongolia.
Date: September 8th - October 10th, 2000.
Detail: A rare opportunity to view the remarkable renaissance of
Mongolian Buddhist Art that has been achieved since the collapse of the
Communist system, by the highly accomplished scholar and artist,
Venerable Purevbat, with the assistance of his skilled craftsmen and
students of the Zanabazar Mongolian Institute of Buddhist Art
The exhibition consists of an extensive display of sacred Buddhist art
and artefacts completed in the last ten years including: thankha
paintings in the unique Mongolian style that is quite distinct in the
Tibetan Buddhist tradition -they are in exact accordance with the
scriptures but include Mongolian script for mantras and syllables and
the soft and delicately balanced colour combinations, and Mongolian
wild-flowers in the background, add a unique quality; applique and
embroidery thankas; cast-iron, carved wood or papier mache sculptures of
Buddhist images in the Zanabazar tradition; temple and stupa models;
three-dimensional mandalas; masks and costumes
for Cham dancing Higlights of the exhibtion: a vast model of Amithaba=B9s=
Pure Land showing exquisite statues and palaces carved in wood; a
collection of 150 well-arranged and beautifully drawn artist=B9s
iconometrical grids whose purpose is to ensure perfect proportions of
the deities according to the scriptural explanation and an entirely new
set of 400 grids for drawing animals based on old drawings collected by
Purevbat in Mongolia
Photographs To complement the display, there is a collection of
contemporary photographs depicting the land, the religious culture, and
the way of life of the Mongolian people.
A catalogue illustrated with full colour plates of paintings and black
and white reproductions of iconometrical grids and statues, and
including the curriculum of the school and a list of future publications
will be available priced =A325 including postage and packing (=A3 sterlin=

Future Plans
It is planned that the exhibition will travel to Japan, Korea, and
Russia.It will also be available for loan to other interested parties.
