Suicide attacks are a potential curse for any religion, said the Dalai Lama,
the spiritual leader of Tibet, making the call that Islam should not be
shown as the reason for terror attacks.
It is not only Muslim societies that have malevolency, but Indians,
Christians and Buddhists have elements of it too, said the Dalai Lama,
calling on everyone to defend Islam.
The Dalai Lama, Muslim religious authorities and representatives of other
religions joined a conference on counter-terrorism held in San Francisco.
He was invited to join the conference as one of the religious authorities
and experts by Imam Seyid Mahdi Horasani from California. Muslims also
practice compassion, said the Dalai Lama, who blamed the suicide attacks for
creating an unfair and distorted view of Islam around the world.
With his emphasis on the call to authorities from all religions to defend
Islam, the Dalai Lama pleaded for greater attention to the ideal of respect
for the individual beliefs of others.
"From some aspects, I am one of the defenders of the Muslim tradition;
however, we should all take action against the criticism of a particular
belief-system or tradition," he said.
