9. Seattle Tibetans Not to Demonstrate Hu's Visit

Press Release

The Board of the Tibetan Association in Washington State has
formally taken a decision not to organize any public demonstrations
against Chinese President Hu Jintao during his visit to Seattle next week.

The Board took this decision in keeping with His Holiness the Dalai Lama's
March 10 statement and subsequent Kashag's appeal. The Committee felt that
if our actions could contribute to creating a conducive atmosphere in
Sino-Tibetan relations visa-vis negotiation process, every single Tibetan
and their supporters have a moral responsibility to help in the process.
However, this decision does not forefeit ours right to organize actions on
behalf of our brethren inside Tibet to create awareness of the plight of the
Tibetan people and to struggle for our just cause.

We feel His Holines s the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan Government-in-Exile
have gone to great extent to provide an appropriate environment to resolve
the Tibetan problem through negotiations. We, however, do not see any
concrete change in the Chinese Government's attitude towards His Holiness or
the Tibetan people even after the much talked about re-establishment of
direct contact between His Holiness' envoys and the Chinese leadership. We
hope our decision not to protest this time and the initiatives being taken
by His Holiness the Dalai Lama will be appreciated by the Chinese leadership
as positive steps towards resolving the Tibetan issue and not as signs of
our weakness. We remain
determined to continue working for the rights of our people in Tibet.

The Tibetan Association of Washington is a non-profit organization of
Tibetans in the State of Washington. It strives to preserve and promote the
unique Tibetan Cultural tradition within the Tibetan Com munity and further
the just cause of Tibet. The Tibetan Association is committed to the
principle of non-violence and supports the leadership of His Holiness the
Dalai Lama, the Temporal and Spiritual leader of Tibet. It recognizes the
Tibetan Government in Exile, based in India, as the legitimate government of
Tibet.

President, Tibetan Association of Washington, Seattle
