Dalai Lama to deliver public talk in Ottawa: Alanis Morissette to act as Master of Ceremonies

March 15, 2004

OTTAWA – The Canada Tibet Committee (CTC) is pleased to announce that His Holiness the Fourteenth Dalai Lama will deliver a public talk in Ottawa on Saturday, April 24, 2004. The talk, entitled “Living Peace” is the Dalai Lama’s only public appearance during his visit to Canada’s capital.

Popular Canadian musician and Ottawa native Alanis Morissette will give a brief acoustic performance and introduce the Dalai Lama. She is a long-time supporter of the Tibetan cause and has performed at two “Tibetan Freedom Concerts” in 1997 and 1999.

On the invitation of the Canada Tibet Committee (CTC), the Dalai Lama will be visiting Ottawa from April 21-24, 2004. The objective of the Ottawa 2004 visit is to build support for the "Tibet China Negotiation Campaign" launched the by CTC in the autumn of 2000. Its goal is to promote the opening of negotiations between representatives of the Dalai Lama and the Government of the People's Republic of China. This initiative calls upon the Prime Minister of Canada to serve as an honest broker between the two parties. To date, 130 Members of Parliament (MP) have signed in support of this initiative. The goal of the campaign is to get the signed support of at least 150 MPs, representing more than half of the House of Commons.

During his trip to Ottawa, the Dalai Lama is expected to meet with government officials, Members of Parliament, non-governmental organizations, business groups and academics. There is still no confirmation yet whether the Prime Minister of Canada, Paul Martin, and/or the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bill Graham, will meet with the Dalai Lama.

All proceeds from this event will go to the Canada Tibet Committee (CTC). The CTC is an independent non-governmental organization of Tibetans and non-Tibetans living in Canada, who are concerned about the continuing human rights violations and lack of democratic freedom in Tibet.
