Tibetan Cultural Society of BC to sponsor Tibetans under Tibetan resettlement program

June 08, 2012

(Vancouver, 8 June 2012) – The Tibetan Cultural Society of British Columbia (TCS of BC) has voted at a membership meeting to be a sponsor under the recently announced Tibetan resettlement program.  They are the first Tibetan Cultural Association in Canada to take this very important step.

As their president, Tashi Tsetan said, “We are extremely fortunate that our membership has decided  to  support this very important program.  As Tibetans we are indeed fortunate to help facilitate an initiative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.”

The Tibetan Resettlement Program was announced by The Honourable Mr. Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, December 10, 2010. Under which the Government of Canada is facilitating the immigration of up to 1,000 Tibetans living in the state of Arunachal Pradesh in India, at the request of His Holiness the Dalai Lama,  the Canada Tibet Committee and Canada's Tibetan community.

Up to 1,000 displaced Tibetans, including principal applicants and their eligible family members, will be accepted over a five-year period

The members of TCS and the larger Tibetan community and its supporters are all working towards this goal.  There are already a substantial number of non-Tibetans and Tibetans who have undertaken to form groups of five to sponsor these Tibetan migrants.

Project Tibet Society also hopes for a similar outcome in the other 2 major Canadian cluster sites, Toronto and Calgary.  As Tashi Tsetan of TCS of BC said, “We hope that the Tibetan Associations in Calgary and Toronto join our ranks by sponsoring some of these Tibetan migrants.  I also hope that all members of the Tibetan communities in Canada participate in this program to ensure its success.”
