"We Tibetans are looking for a legitimate and meaningful autonomy, an arrangement that would enable Tibetans to live within the framework of the People’s Republic of China."

Great news for the Tibetan people

March 22, 2011

Often when we work on behalf of Tibet, we may need to keep various elements of our discussions confidential until such time as we can announce the conclusion to those discussions.
On occasion that may mean we work for years on a project before we can publicly discuss it. This is one of those times.
Today, we can tell you about some truly great news.
In 2007, when His Holiness the Dalai Lama visited Ottawa he asked if Canada would welcome a number of Tibetans living in India to our country.
Following this request, with incredible support from Tibetan communities and their cultural associations across Canada, from Lobsang Nyandak who worked tirelessly with us, and you – our supporters, the Canada Tibet Committee went to work.
We’re thrilled to report that today the Government of Canada announced it will welcome 1,000 Tibetans over five years who are presently living in Arunachal Pradesh in India to Canada.
This is truly a moment for all of us to thank the Canadian government for their courage and commitment.
At the end of the day, however, none of this would have been possible without you, your support and generosity.
Thank you.
And soon there will be 1,000 Tibetan-Canadians here to thank you as well.
As you can imagine this is an incredible gift for the holidays, so may I also take this opportunity to wish you all the very best for the season and 2011.

Executive Director
