CTC Board of Directors: Statement on self-immolations by Tibetans

July 26, 2017

Canada Tibet Committee, July 26, 2017 - The Board of Directors of the Canada Tibet Committee is extremely concerned by the continued trend of self-immolation by Tibetans both inside Tibet and in exile.  We are deeply saddened by each new self-immolation reported and share the unbearable heartbreak of families and friends who have lost their loved ones in this way.

We appeal to Tibetans everywhere to end the use of self-immolation as a means of protest.

As Board members of a Tibet advocacy organization, we grapple with the reality that Tibetans have come to view self-immolation as an effective means to attract world attention to the Tibetan cause.  This seems to be particularly true among young Tibetans.  While we are also frustrated by the inability or unwillingness of the international community to bring about change in Tibet, we nevertheless believe that consistent and engaged public pressure will ultimately yield results.  We therefore renew our commitment to work diligently here in Canada and with Tibet groups in other countries towards achieving this goal.
