GuChuSum Commemorates 20th Annniversary

October 5, 2011

On this day on 27 September, 1987 in Lhasa, monks of Drepung monastery spearheaded pro-independence demonstration which later turned into a mass peaceful protest against the Chinese government. It opened a new chapter in the Tibetan freedom struggle. It was one of the largest peaceful demonstrations after 1959 uprising in Lhasa against the illegal Chinese occupation of Tibet.
1987, 1988 and 1989 saw mass peaceful demonstrations in Tibet. Thousands of Tibetans who took part in the protests were arbitrarily arrested, savagely beaten and sentenced to hard labor. Many Tibetans were killed and many seriously injured. Hu Jin Tao, the then Party Secretary of Tibetan Autonomous Region (TAR) and former President of China declared ‘Martial Law’ in Lhasa on 8 March 1989 following a mass peaceful protest on 5 March to clampdown on Tibetan protesters.

GuChuSum Movement of Tibet commemorated the day at TIPA, holding a function and distributed trophies to Tibetan Martyrs who sacrificed their precious lives for the cause of Tibet. Professor Samdong Rinpoche, former Kalon Tripa and Khenpo Sonam Tenphel, Deputy Speaker of TPIE were Chief Guests at the event.

Later, in the evening, the play: ‘True Situation inside Tibet’ was shown to the public to inform about repression on religious freedom and flagrant abuses of human rights inside Tibet.
