Senator highlights successful conclusion of the 6th World Parliamentarian Convention on Tibet

August 20, 2012

Ottawa, August 14, 2012:  The 6th World Parliamentarians Convention on Tibet (WPCT) was held April 26-29, 2012 in Ottawa, Canada. It was organized by the International Network of Parliamentarians on Tibet (INPaT), the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile (TPiE), and hosted by the Parliamentary Friends of Tibet, Canada (PFT).

The 141 participants came from 34 countries, including 52 parliamentarians, 14 from Canada. A number of International NGOs and observers also attended. We were honoured by the presence of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, who spoke at the opening of the conference.

While in Ottawa, His Holiness also held a public talk, the proceeds of which helped defray the costs of holding the conference. The (WPCT) organizers had committed to donate the surplus, if any, to the resettlement to Canada of Tibetans from India. The conference was successful, both in terms of participants and content. Financially it produced a surplus of $2,800.00, which will be donated to the Resettlement Project.  In addition, I am personally donating $3,000.00 to this project.

Canada Tibet Committee’s board member, Nima Dorjee, made a plea at the Public Talk for support for the resettlement project, which resulted in raising a further $5,000.00.

I believe these initiatives have been successful in continuing the raise awareness and increase support for the Tibetan cause.

On behalf of all involved in the conference, the Public Talk and related activities, I sincerely express our thanks.

Signed:

The Honourable Consiglio DiNino
