Head of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso has confirmed his presence at celebrations marking the 25th anniversary of Lech Walesa receiving the Nobel Peace Prize.

The main ceremonies will be held on December 6th in Walesa’s native Gdansk, which was also the birthplace of Solidarity in 1980 – the first free trade union in the erstwhile communist bloc.

Other distinguished guests are to include His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibet, as well as French President Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

The gala will also be a good occasion to hold informal meetings and discussions. The planned talks of the Dalai Lama with President Sarkozy have triggered strong protests of the Chinese authorities which threatened to narrow relations on the Brussels-Beijing line.
