Re: China's critics fear speaking out, Letter,

March 12

I do not see the hypocrisy of accusing China of skewing historical fact
in its claims regarding Tibet. To suggest that Quebec's history in
Canada is similar to Tibet's history in China is absurd.

Quebecers such as George-Étienne Cartier participated in the conferences
where the British North America Act of 1867 was drafted. Did Tibetans
participate in the drafting of China's constitution in 1954’

Canada has had many prime ministers from Quebec, including French
Quebecers such as Sir Wilfrid Laurier, Pierre Elliot Trudeau and Jean
Chrétien. Has China had any leaders from Tibet’

The government of Canada has recognized the right of Quebec to secede
should a clear majority choose to do so in a referendum. Has China done
the same for Tibet’ In the referendums of 1980 and 1995, Quebecers chose
Canada. Would Tibetans choose China’

French has been an official language in Canada since Confederation, and
its use was further enshrined by the Official Languages Acts of 1969 and
1988. Does the Tibetan language enjoy the same status in China’

A comparison of Quebec's relationship with Canada to Tibet's
relationship with China is an argument against China's actions in Tibet.
